How to Change a Wordpress Theme
Written by Abhishek Ghosh
First of all, you need to make sure that you can actually change the theme of your Wordpress blog. A fact commonly not known to many people new to Wordpress blogging is that you can not use a custom theme for a blog hosted freely at wordpress.com. You can, however choose from a variety of blog templates made available by them and presented at the theme select option which I will describe later.
On the other hand, If you downloaded the source from wordpress.org and host the blog on a server accesible by you(i.e. either on a commercial server or at home), you are at liberty to use any custom theme for it, or even make one yourself.
So, If you have hosted independently and want to change the theme, the following two steps are required. The process is fairly simple and short.

Step 1 : (Wordpress.com users can skip)
The theme will be usually made available in a zipped format. You need to unzip the theme.zip file to the following directory
\wp-content\themes\
The refers to the folder that contains all of your wordpress files. After unzipping, a new folder will be created in \wp-content\themes\.
Step 2 :
Now to actually select the theme, select the 'Themes' button under the 'Appearance' tab on the left hand sidebar in the admin panel. You should be able to see thumbnails of all available themes at this point. Select the theme you have just unzipped. This would bring up a preview and u need to select 'Activate' to make it the current theme of your blog.
To customize the theme further, you can do the followinng -
- Use 'Editor' to edit css settings.
- Use 'Theme options' to edit any parametrs provided along with the theme
- Use 'Widgets' to add/remove widgets from sidebar etc.
