Moving Joomla site from one server to another

Moving a Joomla site from one server to another is not a very difficult task even for a novice.Infact it is much easier than moving a normal dynamic site.
The procedure will consist of 1 + 3 main steps :
The First Step :
BACK UP EVERYTHING
(This step can be skipped, but I strongly recommend that you take a backup)
Just to be on the safe side, I suggest that you back up all your files + data before attempting to move them.
Just login to your server's admin backend or use any FTP client like CoreFTP or Filezilla to zip all of you joomla files & folders into a single zip archive and then download it onto your local system,so that we have a state we can revert back to.I will talk about backing up the database later, in the third step.
The Second Step :
If you've already done the first step (which you should), you should have a zip archive of your website on your local hard disk.If you have not yet don't that please refer to the first step.Now you just need to upload the zip file to your new server and extract it there.There is a tool to do this if you are using CPanel, or you could run a shell command to unzip the file.That's pretty much what you would do for transferring a static site.
The Third Step :
Now we are going to transfer the MySQL database that Joomla created on your current/old server to you new server.
For this you'll need PHP MyAdmin installed on both the servers.Usually all web hosting firms will provide you with PHP MyAdmin, and it's usually located in the CPanel home, under the tab 'Databses'.
If you are unsure about accessing your MySQL server then you should contact your hosting provider.
We will require the name of the database that your Joomla site has been using.If you dont remember the details about your database then you can look it up from the Joomla administration :
1. Login to the administration backend with you admin details.
2. Select 'Global Configuration' from the control panel.
3. Now select the server tab.
4. You can find your databse settings under the 'Database settings' panel.Just note the database name as it will be required in the next step.
Coming back to PHP MyAdmin, we need to perform the following steps :
1. Login to PHP MyAdmin
2. Select the 'Databases' tab, or from the list of databases displayed in the left column, choose the database that your Joomla site has been using.
3. Select the 'Export' tab.
4. Now select all the tables, choose SQL and check 'Save as File'.Provide a filename to the databse being exported and click on 'Go'.This should bring up a download dialog you would usually encounter while downloading any file from the internet using your web browser.Save the file on your local drive.
5. We have exported the database, and now we need to import its tables to your new server.The first step is to create a new database at your new server.You can choose any name for the new databse.The databse can be created from PHP MyAdmin on the new server or using the CPanel on the new server.Also, you'll need to create and associate users with the database.This can be done using CPanel too.
6. Once you have created your database you can proceed with importing the tables from your old database.Just login to your PHP MyAdmin and select the new database that you just created on the new server, and select the 'Import' tab.Upload your .SQL file and click on 'Go'.The results of a successful import or any error would be shown.
The Fourth and Final Step :
The last step is to configure your new Joomla installation and tell it about your new database.This can be done by editing a few lines in the 'Configuration.PHP' file present in the document root of your Joomla installation (The folder where you unzipped your Joomla site).
Find and edit the following lines & save the file :
var $log_path = 'new path to logs';
var $tmp_path = 'new path to tmp';
var $live_site = 'url of home page of your website'
var $ftp_host = 'usually 127.0.0.';
var $ftp_port = 'usually 2';
var $ftp_user = 'ftp username';
var $ftp_pass = 'ftp password';
var $ftp_root = 'ftp root';
var $dbtype = 'should be mysql';
var $host = 'usually localhost';
var $user = 'the user you created and associated to your database';
var $db = 'the name of the new database you created';
var $password = 'the password you set for the database user';
There are more variables that may need to be changed but updating these should get your site up and running on your new server.Some of the information required may have been provided to you by your web-hosting company at the time registration(check your mail inboxes).If not you can ask your hosting company about your ftp username and password.
You should now be able to login at the Joomla administration backend at your new server and view your site.I hope that was helpful.
