Linking Blog to Domain Name
Written by Administrator
Own a blog with decent traffic and have decided to buy a domain for it ? That's great news ! Here's how you can go about doing it -
Choose and register a domain
The very first step is to go get your domain before someone else does. You can register your domain quickly and in a guided manner from a number of services today. Just search 'buy domain' on google. The service I used is here.
However if you are publishing on Blogspot , then it's best to buy a domain from Blogger. It's simple and fast and requires no extra configuration.
If you don't already own a domain :
1. Go to the 'Settings' tab and select 'Publishing'.Then click on 'Custom Domain'.

2. This brings you to next screen where you can check the domain availability and proceed to buy your new domain.

Thats it! Blogger takes care of the configuration and also ensures that when someone tries to reach your blog from its old something.blogspot.com address they are redirected to your new newname.com address so you dont lose any traffic and older backlinks.
If you already own a domain :
If you already bought a domain name for you blog , you need to configure its DNS settings before you can use it for your blog.
Updating the DNS Settings
DNS stands for Domain Name System, and a DNS server determines what site a given address takes you to. So far, you have a domain name but none of the servers on the internet know what to do with it yet. To take care of this, you need to create a CNAME record for your domain with the DNS.
For Blogspot Blog :
You need to associate your domain with ghs.google.com.
Create a new CNAME entry for yourdomain.com or blog.yourdomain.com and point it to ghs.google.com. by entering it in its host.
If your service provider only accepts ip-addresses , you can try the ip-address : 72.14.207.12.
Next, you need to tell blogspot that you want it to associate the new domain to your blog -
Go to 'Settings' tab and select 'Publishing' and reach the custom domain screen as described above.
Now select 'Switch to advanced settings'.

This brings you to the next screen -

Just enter your new domain here and save the settings.
That's all. It may take some time for your domain name to propogate thoughout the web (typically 48 hours).
Blogger still ensures that when someone tries to reach your blog from its old something.blogspot.com address they are redirected to your new yourdomain.com address so you dont lose any traffic and older backlinks.
For others :
Each hosting service has slightly different ways to create CNAME records. When in doubt, check with the particular company you're using for additional help or instructions.
Also you need to know the host address of your current blog hosting provider.
With that you can make your new address point to your existing blog.Contact your domain service provider with your blog host address and the name you wish to associate with it (yourdomain.com or blog.yourdomain.com) and they'll be able to help you out.
